Body Image and Self Confidence
So this is Love Your Body week. Not always an easy thing, huh? What do we base our body images on? I think it's probably safe to say that we all agree it's important for one's mental state to have a healthy self-image, but how do we work on improving our confidence? DO we work to improve it at all?
In the meeting today we discussed how external influences affect us. We talked a lot about media (of course), but also discussed how our friends and family are influential. If you're constantly hanging out with someone who has poor self-esteem, that's going to rub off on you. I know my mother, sister, pre-teen sister, and grandmothers have always been really concerned about their weights - even though most of them are healthy and really great looking - and that's changed how I would view myself. There's yet another reason to encourage each other! Personal benefit.
Obviously we'll never be completely happy with our appearences, but it really is important to gain a healthy level of confidence.

Do take them with a grain of salt, they are advertisements, but...
Meeting Summary 9.22
Hey D.F.,
Last Thursday we had a constructive meeting about our personal definitions of Feminism. Some of the thoughts that came up and questions asked were:
Are we over Feminism? Is it no longer relevant?
"Women have gained the right to do as much as men, just not as little."
What are YOUR personal stereotypes?
How do we play into cultural archetypes? How do we find ourselves? It's okay to fit typecasts, we just need to be conscious of our decisions and why we're making them.
How have we personally experienced Feminism?

Recent Media
These images are all from very recent ad campaigns, or in the case of the first, it is from a recent art series featuring a Glee actress (100 limited edition prints for sale on the artist's website).
I think a lot of people don't really notice that sexism is still a problem. Before a year or two ago, even I didn't realize it. These images just crystallize it a little more clearly.

Why alcoholic housewife could drink freely
Steph sent this eye-opening article to us. I know that this has always been a fear of mine, and I think this article shows why it is important to try and not give up on your dreams (as cheesy as that sounds).

Posting Guidelines
This blog will have a sort of forum-format. We encourage you to comment and discuss on any and all of the posted 'threads'. If you have an awesome feminist/gender rights topic, media review, story, or anything of the sort please send it to one of the admins (club officers) - we want to post and discuss it!
As always, keep it respectful, all! An opinion is an opinion, not a fact, and opinions can be stated in a non-offensive manner. We want to encourage an environment in which all participants feel comfortable!
